Description

Pseudodiplodia is a fungal disease caused by members of the Pseudodiplodia genus, belonging to the group of coelomycetes. This pathogen typically acts as a necrotrophic agent, invading the bark and cambium of woody plants, which eventually leads to tissue death and impaired nutrient circulation throughout the plant vascular system.

The host range of Pseudodiplodia includes a variety of ornamental trees, shrubs, and certain orchard fruit species. The fungus is opportunistic and primarily targets weakened or stressed plants, taking advantage of cracks in the bark or injuries caused by environmental factors or pruning, which act as entry points for the fungal spores.

The visible symptoms of the disease include the formation of discolored, sunken lesions on stems and branches. Within these lesions, tiny, black, pimple-like structures known as pycnidia develop, which release spores that facilitate the spread of the infection. Leaves on the affected branches may show signs of chlorosis, wilting, or premature senescence.

The development and dissemination of the pathogen are highly dependent on high moisture levels and warm temperatures. Rain splash and wind are the primary vectors for moving spores from infected tissues to healthy ones. During periods of persistent wet weather, the rate of infection increases significantly, potentially spreading the disease across an entire plantation.

The economic impact of this disease is significant as it reduces the vigor of the plant, degrades the aesthetic value of landscapes, and can decrease the overall yield of fruit crops. If left unmanaged, the cumulative damage can lead to the death of entire limbs and, in severe cases, the complete collapse of the host plant.

Integrated disease management (IDM) strategies for controlling Pseudodiplodia include:

  • Rigorous pruning and destruction of infected plant material.
  • Sterilization of pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Application of copper-based fungicides as a preventative measure.
