The disease is caused by the fungus Pseudodiplodia potentillae, which belongs to the class Coelomycetes. This pathogen primarily acts by colonizing leaf tissues, where it establishes its vegetative growth and eventually produces asexual fruiting bodies that emerge through the plant epidermis.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are members of the genus Potentilla (cinquefoils). These plants, often used in ornamental landscaping, become susceptible when environmental stress, such as improper watering or excessive canopy density, weakens their natural defense mechanisms against fungal infiltration.

Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic spots appearing on the foliage. These lesions are often irregular in shape and exhibit a characteristic brown or dark necrotic center. As the infection progresses, the diagnostic feature of the disease becomes evident: the development of small, black, pin-head-sized pycnidia clustered within the necrotic areas.

The development and spread of Pseudodiplodia potentillae are highly dependent on moisture levels. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air around the base of the plant provide the necessary conditions for fungal spores to germinate and infect healthy tissue. The pathogen efficiently survives the winter season within fallen leaf litter.
