Description
Pseudogibellula is a genus of entomopathogenic fungi primarily known for infecting spiders. Unlike common phytopathogens that damage crops, this fungus occupies a specialized ecological niche, functioning as a parasite of arachnids within various agroecosystems and natural habitats.
The fungus acts as a pathogen that specifically targets the host's cuticle. After infection, the mycelium penetrates the internal organs of the spider, eventually emerging to form complex conidiophores. This reproductive structure is often what observers notice when inspecting plants for signs of fungal activity.
Symptoms of infection are usually identified by the presence of white or yellowish mycelial filaments emerging from the spider's body. These structures can be found on leaves or bark, often leading to confusion with plant diseases like downy mildew or various leaf spot pathogens by those unfamiliar with fungal taxonomy.
Development and spread are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. In canopy layers of crops or dense field margins, these conditions are often optimal for fungal sporulation, allowing the pathogen to persist across multiple generations of hosts.
From an agricultural standpoint, Pseudogibellula is not considered a threat to plant productivity. It does not cause disease in crops, nor does it impact yield quality or quantity. Therefore, no fungicide applications or protective measures are recommended, as the fungus is simply a part of the complex biological diversity found in healthy fields.
