Description

The genus Pseudohydnum belongs to the basidiomycetes and includes species that cause specific types of wood rot. While many members of this family are saprotrophs playing a vital role in decomposing organic matter, some species can exhibit parasitic properties, infecting weakened forest stands and woody crops.

The causative agent of the disease is fungi that form characteristic gelatinous or cartilaginous fruit bodies. These organisms primarily infect deciduous and coniferous tree species, entering the tissues through mechanical damage to the bark or frost cracks. The development of mycelium leads to the gradual destruction of the wood structure, making trees vulnerable to windthrow.

Symptoms of infection include the appearance of characteristic jelly-like fruit bodies on the trunks, which are especially visible during periods of high humidity. The infected wood gradually loses its strength, changes color, and develops a loose texture. In advanced cases, progressive crown dieback and the death of large tree branches are observed.

The development and active spread of the pathogen depend directly on climatic conditions. High air humidity, moderate temperatures, and the presence of bark damage are key factors facilitating spore germination. The fungus spreads effectively through spores, which are carried by wind or raindrops over significant distances.

Protection measures include conducting sanitary logging, aimed at removing infected specimens to prevent further spore dispersal. An important aspect of prevention is maintaining high standards of forest management: timely treatment of wounds, protecting trees from mechanical damage, and maintaining optimal sanitary conditions of the soil and canopy.
