Description

Pseudomassaria is a genus of ascomycete fungi that includes pathogenic species responsible for specific fungal infections in woody plants and shrubs. One of the most studied representatives is Pseudomassaria corni, which typically affects species within the dogwood family, triggering necrotic processes in both foliage and young stems.

The disease is caused by sac fungi that develop perithecia-type fruiting bodies within the host plant tissues. This pathology is classified as an infectious leaf spot or necrosis, where the fungal mycelium actively destroys cellular architecture, infiltrating deep into the leaf parenchyma, which eventually causes premature desiccation and premature leaf drop.

Primary symptoms of the infection include the appearance of dark, often circular or irregularly shaped spots on leaves, surrounded by a characteristic chlorotic halo. Over time, small black specks appear in the center of these lesions, representing the fungal fruiting bodies. In cases of severe infection, leaves may become deformed or curled, significantly reducing the plant's overall photosynthetic capacity.

The development and spread of Pseudomassaria are facilitated by high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures. The fungus spores are easily dispersed by wind, raindrops, and insects, infecting weakened plants through mechanical wounds or stomata. The pathogen primarily overwinters in fallen leaves and damaged branches, maintaining viability until the start of the next growing season.

The economic impact of this disease is significant, as it leads to the weakening of ornamental and fruit crops, reducing their frost resistance and overall immunity. To prevent outbreaks, it is recommended to implement comprehensive protection measures:

  • Collect and destroy (burn or deeply bury) all fallen foliage to remove inoculum.
  • Perform sanitary pruning of infected branches to eliminate the source of infection.
  • Apply copper-based fungicides or systemic chemical treatments during the growing season.
  • Maintain proper spacing between plants to improve air circulation within the canopy.
