Pseudonectria is a genus of ascomycete fungi known to cause destructive diseases in various plant species, particularly ornamental shrubs. Classified as a necrotic disease, it primarily impacts the bark and stems, leading to systemic disruption of the plant's vascular health. The fungus acts as a necrotrophic parasite, actively killing host cells to feed on the organic matter.
The most susceptible host for this pathogen is the boxwood (Buxus species). In these plants, Pseudonectria contributes to serious blighting, resulting in significant dieback of branches. While often associated with boxwood, the pathogen can also manifest on other woody ornamental plants that have been stressed by poor environmental conditions or mechanical damage.
The visual symptoms of an infection typically begin with the appearance of sunken, discolored lesions on the stems and bark. As the disease progresses, the bark may split, and the leaves above the infection site often turn yellow, then brown, and eventually drop off. Under high humidity conditions, the presence of the fungus is confirmed by the appearance of minute, orange-to-red conidial sporulation structures on the affected wood surface.
The development of Pseudonectria is heavily dependent on moisture. Wet, humid conditions, combined with poor airflow within the plant canopy, favor the spread of spores. The pathogen disseminates through rain splash, wind currents, and human activity, particularly through contaminated pruning tools. Wounds caused by winter frost or improper pruning serve as primary entry points for the fungal spores.
The impact of this disease can be devastating, leading to the total loss of the plant's decorative value or eventual death. Effective management and prevention strategies include:
- Rigorous sanitary pruning to remove all infected stems, cutting well into healthy wood.
- Frequent sterilization of pruning shears with alcohol to prevent cross-contamination.
- Application of preventative fungicide sprays during periods of high humidity.
- Improving site conditions by increasing plant spacing to ensure adequate light and air circulation.
