Description

The Pseudoperisporiaceae family comprises a group of ascomycetous fungi that primarily exist as parasites on various plant species. These fungi are typically known for their epiphytic growth, where they inhabit the surface of leaves and stems. By forming dark mycelial mats, they interfere with the natural physiological processes of the plant, often leading to reduced vigor and aesthetic degradation.

The pathology is characterized by the formation of localized lesions or dark discolorations on the plant's surface. Unlike some systemic pathogens, these fungi often remain localized on the epidermis. However, their cumulative effect on large leaf areas can significantly impact the plant's photosynthetic capacity, resulting in chlorosis, tissue necrosis, and in severe cases, premature defoliation.

Host plants include a wide variety of woody ornamentals, fruit trees, and forest vegetation. These fungi thrive in environments characterized by high humidity, stagnant air, and frequent rainfall, which facilitate the germination of spores and the rapid expansion of the fungal colony. Proper environmental management is therefore critical in preventing the initial infection.

Recognizing the symptoms early is key to disease management. Growers should look for the following signs:

  • Dark, crust-like or velvety spots on leaves.
  • Small, dark fruiting bodies visible to the naked eye.
  • Yellowing and wilting of the affected foliage.
  • Overall stunted growth compared to healthy specimens.

Effective control strategies focus on sanitation and chemical intervention. Removing and destroying infested plant material is essential to reduce the inoculum load for the following season. When chemical intervention is necessary, applying fungicides, particularly those recommended for ascomycetes, during the early stages of symptom development provides the best results in managing and mitigating the spread of the disease.
