Pseudopeziza is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Helotiales, known to cause various types of leaf spot diseases in plants. This pathogen primarily affects the foliage, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity and significant agricultural losses in legume crops such as alfalfa and clover.

The infection manifests as small, circular, dark-colored spots on the leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots expand, and characteristic fruiting bodies called apothecia emerge in the center of the lesions, often appearing as tiny, raised, disc-like structures visible to the naked eye.

The disease cycle is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus overwinters in crop debris left in the field, producing spores that are disseminated by wind or water splash during rainy weather in the spring and summer months.

Crop damage can be severe, causing premature defoliation of the lower leaves. This not only stunts plant growth but also drastically reduces the protein content and overall quality of forage, making it less palatable and nutritious for livestock consumption.
