Common leaf spot, caused by the fungus Pseudopeziza trifolii, is a widespread fungal disease affecting clover crops. As an ascomycete pathogen, it targets the foliage of the plant, potentially compromising both yield and nutritional quality in forage production systems.

The primary hosts of the pathogen are various clover species, including red clover (Trifolium pratense) and white clover (Trifolium repens). The disease is particularly prevalent in regions with humid climates, as high humidity and moderate temperatures provide the necessary conditions for fungal development and spread.

Symptoms initially appear as small, circular, dark brown to black spots on the leaves. As the fungus matures, a small, cup-shaped fruiting body (apothecium) develops in the center of the lesion. Under severe infection pressure, these spots coalesce, leading to extensive chlorosis, necrosis, and premature defoliation of the clover canopy.

The fungus survives the winter on crop debris, producing ascospores during the spring that are disseminated by wind and splashing rain. Dense crop stands are highly susceptible, as the lack of airflow and moisture retention on the leaf surface creates a favorable microenvironment for the germination of fungal spores and subsequent infection.

The economic impact involves significant loss of dry matter yield and a decrease in the digestibility of the forage. Management strategies focus on an integrated approach:

  • Planting resistant or tolerant clover cultivars.
  • Implementing regular mowing schedules to remove infected foliage before sporulation.
  • Ensuring proper soil fertility to promote vigorous plant growth.
  • Practicing crop rotation to reduce the inoculum load in the field.
