Description
The fungus Pseudophaeolus baudonii is a severe root-rotting pathogen that primarily affects woody plants. As a basidiomycete, it acts as a wood-decay agent, infiltrating the root systems and the root collar of trees, leading to the gradual necrosis of tissues and eventual structural instability of the host plant.
A wide variety of plant species can be susceptible to this infection, with major economic impacts on coffee, cocoa, and eucalyptus plantations. The fungus does not discriminate strongly between younger saplings and mature trees, often causing substantial mortality rates that can devastate entire sections of a plantation if left unmanaged.
Symptoms of the disease are typically progressive: early indicators include yellowing of foliage and thinning of the canopy. As the root system loses its ability to uptake water and nutrients, the tree shows signs of wilting. In later stages, identifying the pathogen is possible by locating the characteristic tough, concentric, and often fan-shaped fruiting bodies that emerge at the base of the infected trunk.
The development of Pseudophaeolus baudonii is facilitated by environmental factors such as high soil moisture and warm temperatures. The fungus spreads effectively through root contact in dense plantings and via wind-borne spores. Because the pathogen can persist as a saprophyte on decaying organic matter within the soil, it creates a persistent inoculum source that can infect subsequent crops planted in the same area.
Control strategies must be rigorous to prevent further spread. The primary recommendation is the systematic removal and destruction of infected trees, ensuring that as much of the root system as possible is extracted. Isolating the infected zone by digging trenches can help prevent the spread of the mycelium through root grafting. Improving soil drainage and minimizing mechanical root injuries are essential long-term preventive practices to lower the risk of successful infection.
