Description
The disease is caused by the phytopathogenic fungus Pseudophloeosporella dioscoreae. This organism belongs to the group of fungi that specifically targets the foliage of its host, leading to significant physiological stress and reducing the overall productivity of the plant.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are species of the Dioscorea genus, commonly known as yams. While the infection manifests primarily on the leaves, severe cases can affect petioles and stems, resulting in premature senescence and canopy thinning, which directly impacts tuber development.
Symptoms typically appear as small, dark-colored spots on the leaf blades. As the infection progresses, these lesions expand and darken, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. In advanced stages, large portions of the leaf tissue become necrotic, leading to leaf drop and decreased photosynthetic capacity.
Development and dissemination of the pathogen are highly favored by warm temperatures and high humidity levels. The fungal spores are primarily dispersed via rainfall splash and wind currents. Dense crop canopy and poor air circulation within the field promote rapid spread of the disease during the growing season.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to mitigate the damage caused by the fungus. Key control strategies include:
- maintaining adequate plant spacing to improve airflow;
- rotation of crops to break the disease cycle in the soil;
- removal and destruction of infected crop residues;
