The fungus Pseudopithomyces maydicus is a known pathogen that primarily causes leaf spot disease in maize (corn). The disease primarily affects corn crops across various stages of development. While it is often considered a minor pathogen, under high-inoculum pressure or specific environmental conditions, it can colonize a significant portion of the leaf area, thereby affecting the overall photosynthetic efficiency and health of the crop.
