Pseudoplea leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the ascomycete Pseudoplea trifolii (often classified as Leptosphaerulina trifolii). This pathogen is known to specifically target leguminous species, causing significant damage to forage crops and negatively impacting the overall biomass productivity in field conditions.

The primary hosts for this disease include alfalfa, clover, and several other perennial legumes. It is prevalent in regions with moderate and high rainfall, as the pathogen requires moisture for spore germination and colonization of host plant tissues. The impact can be severe in dense stands where the microclimate remains humid.

Typical symptoms involve the appearance of small, round, light-colored spots with a distinct dark or reddish-brown border on the leaves. As the disease advances, these spots may expand, merge, or cause the necrotic center to tear, resulting in a shot-hole effect. Severe infection leads to chlorosis, premature senescence of foliage, and reduced hay quality.

Environmental conditions that favor the spread of the pathogen include persistent wet weather and temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C. The disease cycle is driven by ascospores that are discharged into the air and dispersed by rain splash. The fungus persists during the dormant season in infected crop debris on the soil surface.

Effective management strategies focus on sanitation and cultural practices to minimize the inoculum load. These include:

  • Ploughing down infected plant residues to promote decomposition.
  • Implementing crop rotation to break the disease life cycle.
  • Selecting resistant or tolerant cultivars for sowing.
