The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Puccinia albulensis, a specialized parasite within the Pucciniaceae family. This pathogen is known for specifically targeting Sedum species, colonizing the host tissues and extracting nutrients, which leads to metabolic stress and structural damage to the plant.
Various species of Sedum, commonly grown as groundcovers, rock garden plants, or succulents, are vulnerable to this pathogen. The disease impacts the aesthetics and health of the plants, often starting from the basal leaves and progressing rapidly if environmental conditions allow the fungus to thrive.
Symptoms of the infection include the emergence of characteristic rust-colored pustules on the foliage and stems. As the infection matures, these pustules rupture, releasing masses of spores that look like reddish-brown dust. Affected tissues eventually yellow, collapse, and die off, significantly weakening the affected plant's structure.
Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the spread of Puccinia albulensis. The pathogen requires high relative humidity and prolonged periods of leaf wetness to germinate.
