The pathogen Puccinia andropogonis is a rust fungus belonging to the order Pucciniales. It is characterized by a complex, heteroecious life cycle that requires different host plants to complete all its developmental stages, alternating between grasses and various alternate host species.
This fungus primarily affects a wide range of grasses within the Poaceae family, including various native prairie grasses and forage crops. While it is often considered a disease of pastureland, it can potentially affect cereal crops if they are cultivated in proximity to infested wild grasses.
Symptomatology involves the formation of uredinia, which appear as orange to reddish-brown pustules on leaves and stems. As the season progresses, these pustules develop into telia, which are dark brown or black in color, signaling the end of the active infection cycle and the beginning of the dormancy stage.
The development and spread of Puccinia andropogonis are heavily dependent on environmental conditions. High humidity levels, heavy dew, and mild temperatures create the perfect environment for spore germination and rapid secondary infection cycles, which are then disseminated by wind.
The economic impact of this disease is significant, particularly in forage production. By damaging photosynthetic tissues, the fungus causes premature defoliation and reduces the nutrient content of the plants.
