The disease is caused by the obligate fungal pathogen Puccinia anisacanthi, which belongs to the order Pucciniales. As a specialized parasite, it relies entirely on its living host to complete its life cycle, deriving nutrients directly from the plant's cells, which significantly impairs the host's vigor.
This rust disease specifically targets plant species within the genus Anisacanthus. Being an ornamental plant, the aesthetic impact of the rust is particularly damaging for landscape use, as the lesions compromise the plant's structural integrity and visual quality over time.
The primary symptom of Puccinia anisacanthi is the development of pustules on the leaf surfaces, which eventually break through the epidermis.
