Snapdragon rust is caused by the fungus Puccinia antirrhini, an obligate parasite that specifically infects the Antirrhinum genus. This disease is a significant threat to greenhouse production and outdoor garden displays, often resulting in severe economic loss.

The pathogen attacks all parts of the snapdragon plant, including leaves, stems, and flower buds. Early detection is crucial, as the fungus quickly compromises the plant's health, leading to stunted growth, leaf senescence, and eventually plant collapse.

Characteristic symptoms include chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surface, followed by the development of distinctive reddish-brown, powdery pustules on the underside of the leaves. These pustules represent the site of mass spore production, which facilitates rapid secondary infection.

The disease thrives in high humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C. Free moisture on foliage is essential for spore germination; therefore, overhead irrigation and poor air circulation are the primary drivers of an outbreak in both nursery and home settings.

Control strategies emphasize prevention through proper sanitation, such as removing and destroying infected plant debris. Cultural practices, such as maintaining proper plant spacing and avoiding water contact with leaves, are vital. For severe cases, chemical management using fungicides like triazoles or mancozeb may be necessary.
