Description

Peanut rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia arachidis, is a major foliar disease that significantly impacts peanut production globally. This obligate parasite thrives in tropical and subtropical regions where the host crop is grown. The disease is characterized by its ability to spread rapidly across fields, leading to extensive damage if not managed with timely intervention.

The primary symptoms appear as small chlorotic flecks on the leaf surface, which eventually erupt to form uredinia. These pustules contain a mass of reddish-brown urediniospores, giving the infected plant a distinct rusty appearance. As the disease advances, these pustules can merge, covering the entire leaf area and causing severe necrosis and premature defoliation, which severely limits the plant's ability to produce energy.

The pathogen thrives in warm, humid conditions with temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. High humidity and leaf wetness are critical factors for the germination of spores and subsequent infection. Wind and rain splash are the main agents of spore dispersal, allowing the fungus to travel across large geographical distances and initiate secondary infection cycles within a single growing season.

Economic damage caused by Puccinia arachidis is severe, with yield losses often ranging from 30% to 70% under favorable conditions for the disease. The loss of foliage interrupts the filling of pods, leading to smaller, shriveled kernels with reduced oil content. In addition to quantitative losses, the quality and market value of the harvest are substantially downgraded, affecting the profitability of the entire agricultural enterprise.

To effectively manage and prevent peanut rust, a multi-faceted strategy is required:

  • Planting rust-resistant or tolerant peanut cultivars.
  • Practicing crop rotation to break the disease cycle.
  • Sanitation, including the destruction of crop debris and volunteer plants.
  • Application of preventative or systemic fungicides based on regular field scouting.
