The disease known as balloon vine rust is caused by the fungus Puccinia arechavaletae. This organism belongs to the order Pucciniales and is classified as an obligate biotroph, meaning it relies entirely on living host plant tissue to complete its complex life cycle. It is a specialized pathogen that causes rust disease, characterized by the production of distinctive spore-bearing structures.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are plants within the Sapindaceae family, most notably the genus Cardiospermum. While these plants may be grown for ornamental purposes or occur naturally in the wild, the presence of the fungus can significantly impair the health of the host population, impacting their growth and reproductive success.
Symptomatology typically involves the development of rust-colored pustules on the undersides of leaves and along stems. These pustules represent eruptive spore masses that break through the plant cuticle. As the infection progresses, symptoms often include chlorosis (yellowing), necrosis, and premature abscission of the leaves, which hinders the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis.
