Description
The causative agent of Bouvardia rust is the fungal pathogen Puccinia bouvardiae. This obligate parasite is highly specialized, specifically targeting plants of the genus Bouvardia. In greenhouse environments, this fungus can become a persistent problem if not managed with strict horticultural practices.
The primary host for this fungus is the ornamental shrub Bouvardia. The pathogen affects both the foliage and stems, causing significant stress to the plant. Because the crop is valued primarily for its aesthetic appeal and cut flower production, even moderate infections can render the plants commercially unsalable.
Symptoms initially appear as small chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surfaces. As the infection progresses, distinctive rust-colored or orange pustules, known as uredinia, develop on the undersides of the leaves. These pustules eventually rupture, releasing masses of spores that further infect the foliage, leading to leaf yellowing, necrosis, and premature drop.
The spread of Puccinia bouvardiae is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. Spores are easily disseminated by air currents, splashing water from irrigation, or contact with contaminated tools. High-density planting in greenhouses without adequate ventilation significantly accelerates the disease cycle.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural control involves removing infected plant debris, ensuring proper plant spacing for airflow, and avoiding overhead irrigation that leaves water on foliage. Chemical control includes the timely application of fungicides specifically labeled for rust control to prevent spore germination and mycelial spread.
