Description
The causative agent of the disease is the rust fungus Puccinia cacabata, an obligate parasite that specifically infects cotton plants. As an autoecious or heteroecious rust species, it relies on specific environmental conditions and the presence of alternate hosts, such as various Solanum weed species, to complete its complex biological life cycle.
The fungus manifests primarily during the growing season when environmental conditions permit the rapid production of urediniospores. These spores serve as the primary inoculum for successive infection cycles on cotton fields, leading to significant foliage damage and reduced physiological health of the crop.
Symptoms of Puccinia cacabata include the development of small, chlorotic spots that eventually break through the epidermis to reveal bright orange or rust-colored pustules. These pustules are typically located on the underside of leaves, though they can also appear on stems and petioles under severe infection pressure, leading to leaf drop and stunted plant growth.
The environmental epidemiology of the disease is heavily dependent on moisture. High relative humidity, frequent morning dews, and moderate temperatures are critical for spore germination and successful colonization. Wind currents play a vital role in the long-distance dispersal of spores, which can lead to regional outbreaks if host plants are present.
The economic impact of cotton rust is characterized by lower fiber yields and poor fiber quality. Control strategies must be integrated to be effective, focusing on the reduction of the primary inoculum source. Effective management practices include:
- rigorous sanitation and removal of alternate weed hosts like wild nightshade;
- implementation of resistant cotton cultivars;
