The causative agent of Campanula rust is the basidiomycete fungus Puccinia campanulae. As an obligate parasite, this pathogen infects plants belonging to the Campanula genus, drawing nutrients directly from the host plant's cells and compromising its structural integrity.
This fungal disease predominantly affects various species of bellflowers, which are popular in residential gardens and horticultural collections. While it can appear on wild populations, its impact on ornamental cultivars is often severe, leading to significant foliage damage and stunted growth.
The primary symptom is the development of circular, powdery, rust-colored pustules, typically found on the undersides of the leaves. As the infection progresses, these pustules can merge, causing the foliage to yellow, curl, and eventually drop off, which severely reduces the plant's aesthetic value and photosynthesis capacity.
The disease spreads rapidly under conditions of high humidity, poor air circulation, and moderate temperatures. Moisture on the leaf surfaces is essential for spore germination, making wet seasons or excessive overhead irrigation critical periods for the disease's advancement through a garden bed.
