Description

The causative agent of this disease is the heteroecious rust fungus Puccinia caricina, which completes its complex life cycle by alternating between two hosts: currant bushes and sedge plants. The primary infection begins in the spring when aeciospores, having overwintered on dead sedge debris, are wind-dispersed to the young leaves of the currant.

This pathogen specifically targets various species of currants, causing significant physiological stress. The disease inhibits the plant's ability to produce nutrients, which leads to stunted growth and a considerable decrease in the overall yield of berries throughout the growing season.

Symptoms appear as distinct, bright orange cup-shaped structures on the undersides of the leaves. As the infection progresses, the foliage becomes discolored, develops chlorotic spots, and eventually withers, causing premature defoliation that severely compromises the plant's vigor and winter hardiness.

The development and spread of the rust are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly high humidity and frequent rainfall. Proximity to marshy areas or damp landscapes populated by sedge acts as the primary reservoir for the fungus, facilitating recurring outbreaks during humid springs.
