The causal agent of this plant disease is the fungus Puccinia chaetochloae, an obligate parasite within the Basidiomycota phylum. It is specifically adapted to infect various species of grasses, primarily those in the genus Setaria (foxtail). This disease is classified as a rust, recognized for its distinct formation of teliospores and urediniospores within the host tissues.
The disease primarily affects foxtail species, which are widespread weeds in agricultural fields. Because Puccinia chaetochloae targets these specific grasses, it can be found in a variety of environments, ranging from disturbed agricultural land to natural grasslands. While primarily associated with wild species, it serves as a crucial component of the fungal pathogen diversity within cereal crop ecosystems.
