Puccinia chondrillina is a highly host-specific rust fungus that serves as a critical biological control agent. It is categorized as an obligate parasite, meaning it requires the living tissue of its host plant, specifically the skeleton weed (Chondrilla juncea), to survive and complete its complex biological life cycle.
The fungus primarily targets the skeleton weed, a persistent and invasive weed in many agricultural systems and rangelands worldwide. Unlike many other rust fungi that pose threats to crops, Puccinia chondrillina has evolved to affect only the Chondrilla genus, making it an environmentally friendly tool for weed management without posing risks to agricultural harvests.
