Description

Chrysanthemum rust is caused by the obligate fungal pathogen Puccinia chrysanthemi. This fungus is highly host-specific, primarily affecting various species and cultivars of chrysanthemums. It is considered one of the most destructive diseases in chrysanthemum cultivation, capable of causing significant yield and quality losses.

The disease is characterized by the appearance of small, pale green or yellow spots on the upper leaf surfaces. As the infection progresses, distinct, circular, brown to dark-brown pustules, known as uredinia, develop on the undersides of the leaves. These pustules rupture the leaf epidermis to release masses of powdery spores, which serve as the primary inoculum for further spread.

Development of the fungus is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and temperatures between 18°C and 25°C. Spores are easily disseminated by splashing water, wind, or human activity within a greenhouse or nursery setting. Damp foliage and poor airflow are critical factors that promote spore germination and subsequent plant infection.

The damage caused by Puccinia chrysanthemi is extensive, as the fungus actively siphons nutrients from the plant host. This depletion leads to rapid chlorosis, leaf desiccation, and premature defoliation. Consequently, the affected plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced floral development, and, in severe cases, total plant collapse or death.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that includes strict sanitation, such as removing and destroying infected plant debris. Improving cultural practices, like watering at the base of the plant to keep foliage dry and ensuring adequate spacing for ventilation, is essential. When infection pressure is high, the application of appropriate systemic or contact fungicides is necessary to manage the outbreak.
