The disease known as rust of sedge is caused by the obligate fungal pathogen Puccinia cyperi. This basidiomycete fungus is a specialized parasite that colonizes the tissues of plants within the Cyperaceae family, utilizing host nutrients to complete its complex reproductive cycle.

Primary hosts for this pathogen include various species of the Cyperus genus. While some plants are cultivated for ornamental or agricultural purposes, others are wild sedges that serve as important alternative hosts, allowing the fungus to overwinter and remain persistent in the ecosystem.

The clinical signs of the infection are characterized by the emergence of uredinia and telia on leaves and stems. These reproductive structures appear as raised, rusty-brown pustules that rupture the plant epidermis. Over time, these lesions lead to tissue necrosis, which severely reduces the photosynthetic surface area.

The development of Puccinia cyperi is heavily dependent on environmental conditions. High humidity levels, prolonged leaf wetness caused by dew or heavy rainfall, and moderate temperatures provide the ideal microclimate for spore germination and infection. Wind dispersal facilitates the rapid spread of the pathogen across host populations.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Agricultural producers should prioritize crop rotation, the use of certified healthy planting material, and rigorous sanitation practices. Fungicide applications may be necessary during periods of high disease pressure to protect valuable crops from severe yield reduction.
