The disease known as Delphinium rust is caused by the fungus Puccinia delphinii. This pathogen is a specialized rust fungus that utilizes the host plant's resources to complete its complex life cycle, primarily affecting the foliage and stems of its host.
The primary host for this fungus is the Delphinium genus. The infection impairs the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis effectively, which weakens the specimen, stunts its overall growth, and significantly diminishes its aesthetic value in landscape design and floral gardens.
The diagnostic signs of the infection include the appearance of small, rusty-brown or orange, powdery pustules primarily on the underside of leaves. As the disease progresses, these pustules rupture the plant epidermis to release spores, leading to chlorosis, necrotic spotting, and premature dropping of the affected foliage.
The lifecycle and spread of Puccinia delphinii are heavily dependent on environmental factors, particularly high humidity, heavy dew, and moderate temperatures. Rain splashes and wind are the primary vectors for moving spores from infected tissues to healthy neighbors, allowing for rapid outbreaks in dense plantings.
