Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Puccinia dichondrae, which is an obligate parasite specifically targeting plants in the Dichondra genus. As a rust fungus, it relies entirely on its host to survive and complete its life cycle. This pathogen can cause significant damage to the aesthetic quality of ornamental ground covers and container-grown plants.

The primary host for this pathogen is Dichondra repens. The fungus thrives in environments characterized by high relative humidity, poor air circulation, and persistent moisture on the leaf surfaces. These conditions are commonly found in dense plantings or during periods of frequent rainfall and foggy weather.

Symptoms of Dichondra rust include the formation of small, pale spots on the upper leaf surface, which correspond to the development of pustules on the underside.
