Description

The disease is caused by the heteroecious rust fungus Puccinia dioicae, which completes its complex biological cycle by alternating between different host plants. Sedges serve as the primary alternate host, allowing the pathogen to overwinter, while its active stage affects various susceptible crop species and wild plants within the Asteraceae family and others.

The pathogen poses a significant risk to susceptible plant species located in close proximity to infected sedge populations. The severity of the outbreak is heavily dependent on the spatial distribution of the alternate host, as the wind-borne spores migrate from wetlands or marshy field margins to the target crops during the early stages of the growing season.

Diagnostic symptoms include the formation of bright orange or yellowish pustules, known as aecia, typically appearing on the underside of leaves and stems. As the infection progresses, the host tissue becomes distorted, chlorosis develops, and premature senescence of the foliage occurs, severely impacting the plant's metabolic processes and overall growth potential.

Environmental conditions characterized by high humidity, prolonged leaf wetness, and moderate temperatures are ideal for the rapid development and dispersal of the fungus. The disease thrives in regions with poor drainage, as the presence of surface moisture facilitates spore germination and successful penetration of the plant cuticle, leading to localized epidemics.

Effective management strategies prioritize the disruption of the fungus life cycle through the elimination of alternate hosts (sedges) in adjacent areas and improving field drainage. Cultural practices, such as crop rotation and spacing, play a vital role in reducing infection pressure. When necessary, the use of systemic fungicides, including triazoles and strobilurins, provides reliable control for commercial crops.
