The disease known as Dulichium rust is caused by the obligate fungal pathogen Puccinia dulichii. This fungus belongs to the order Pucciniales and is specifically adapted to infect sedges. It relies entirely on its host plant to complete its life cycle, utilizing host tissues for nutrient acquisition and reproductive development through the formation of various spore stages.

The primary host for this fungus is Dulichium arundinaceum. The infection is primarily found in wetland or marsh environments where the host plant thrives. The interaction between the pathogen and the host is highly specific, meaning the fungus cannot easily jump to other unrelated species, making it a targeted stressor for specific sedge populations.

The physical symptoms of the infection include the development of rust-colored pustules on leaves and stems. As the fungus matures, these pustules rupture the host epidermis, releasing masses of urediniospores or teliospores.
