Description

The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Puccinia echeveriae, a specialized obligate pathogen belonging to the rust fungi group. It specifically targets plants within the Crassulaceae family, particularly the Echeveria genus. The fungus completes its life cycle by forming pustules on the plant tissues, which serve as dispersal units for the spread of the infection to neighboring healthy plants.

This disease primarily affects ornamental succulents grown in greenhouses or indoor environments. Echeveria species are highly susceptible, especially when grown under poor light conditions, high humidity, or crowded settings. The fungus invades the leaf epidermis, drawing nutrients from the host plant and disrupting its physiological processes.

Symptoms of Echeveria rust are characterized by the appearance of small, round, rusty-brown to orange pustules on both sides of the leaves. As the infection progresses, these pustules rupture, releasing spores. In severe cases, the leaf structure becomes deformed, chlorosis occurs, and the plant may drop its leaves prematurely, significantly reducing its aesthetic value.

Development and spread of Puccinia echeveriae are favored by high humidity, stagnant air, and the presence of moisture on the leaf surface. The fungus thrives at moderate temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. Spores are easily disseminated by wind currents, splashing water from irrigation, or through physical handling with contaminated tools.

Management and prevention require an integrated approach to maintain plant health:

  • Quarantine new plants to prevent the introduction of the fungus.
  • Increase air circulation and ensure plants are not overcrowded.
  • Avoid overhead watering to keep leaf surfaces dry.
  • Apply appropriate fungicides, such as those containing copper or systemic agents, at the onset of symptoms.
  • Remove and dispose of severely infected plant tissues immediately.
