Description
The disease is caused by the obligate parasite Puccinia emaculata, a fungus belonging to the Basidiomycota phylum. As an obligate biotroph, this pathogen requires living plant tissue to complete its complex life cycle, manifesting primarily as a foliar rust disease.
The primary host for this fungus is common millet (Panicum miliaceum). While the pathogen significantly impacts commercial millet production, it also infects various wild grass species, which serve as alternative hosts and reservoirs for the fungus during the off-season.
The symptoms of millet rust include the appearance of numerous small, rust-colored or dark brown pustules on the leaf surfaces and stems. As the infection progresses, these pustules rupture the plant epidermis, leading to leaf chlorosis, necrosis, and premature senescence of the foliage.
The development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. The urediniospores are primarily disseminated by wind currents, allowing the disease to spread rapidly through fields and between adjacent regions under favorable weather.
The impact of this disease on agricultural productivity is significant, resulting in reduced grain yield and lower nutrient accumulation in the seeds due to impaired photosynthetic activity. Control measures include selecting resistant cultivars, implementing strict weed management, and applying fungicides when weather conditions favor disease outbreak.
