Description
Puccinia granularis is a fungal pathogen responsible for a condition commonly known as geranium rust. As a specialized rust fungus, it focuses its life cycle on specific host plants, severely impacting their health and ornamental value in both greenhouses and outdoor garden settings.
The disease primarily targets various species and cultivars within the Pelargonium genus. It is particularly problematic in dense greenhouse environments where high plant density and controlled climatic conditions can facilitate rapid transmission of the infection among healthy specimens.
Symptoms are characterized by the appearance of chlorotic or yellowish spots on the upper leaf surface. As the fungus progresses, distinct raised pustules (uredinia) break through the epidermis on the underside of the leaf. These pustules contain a reddish-brown, powdery mass of spores, which are the primary means of further infection.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Puccinia granularis. High humidity, stagnant air, and water droplets lingering on the foliage are essential for spore germination. Temperatures between 18 °C and 24 °C create an ideal environment for the fungus to multiply rapidly.
The damage caused by this pathogen includes severe leaf drop, reduced photosynthetic efficiency, and overall weakening of the plant's structural integrity. Preventive strategies focusing on cultural practices are the first line of defense, supplemented by chemical interventions when the infection is established.
- Promptly remove and dispose of infected leaves or entire plants.
- Ensure adequate spacing to promote airflow and foliage drying.
- Use fungicides containing active ingredients like tebuconazole or myclobutanil.
- Avoid overhead irrigation to keep the leaves dry.
- Sanitize all tools and working surfaces to prevent cross-contamination.
