Rust of Heuchera

Puccinia heucherae is an obligate parasitic fungus responsible for the development of rust disease in ornamental plants belonging to the Saxifragaceae family. This pathogen specifically targets the foliage, causing significant physiological stress and aesthetic damage, which can lead to the decline of perennial garden plants if left unmanaged.

The primary hosts for this fungus include various cultivars of Heuchera (coral bells), as well as related genera such as Heucherella and Tiarella. These plants are often used in landscaping for their attractive foliage, making the visual impact of the disease particularly problematic for gardeners and commercial nursery growers alike.

The infection is characterized by the appearance of small, circular, pustule-like structures on the underside of the leaves. These pustules contain spores, which may range in color from yellowish-orange to dark brown. As the disease progresses, corresponding pale or necrotic spots appear on the upper leaf surface, eventually causing leaves to curl, yellow, and wither prematurely.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Puccinia heucherae. The pathogen thrives in high-humidity environments with moderate temperatures, particularly when leaves remain wet for extended periods. Spores are primarily dispersed through wind currents, splashing water from irrigation, or physical contact with contaminated garden tools.
