The causal agent of orange rust is the fungus Puccinia kuehnii, an obligate biotrophic pathogen. As an obligate parasite, it requires a living host to complete its lifecycle, which involves the production of urediniospores that allow for rapid dispersal across vast agricultural landscapes. This pathogen is highly specialized and relies on specific host tissues for survival and reproduction.
The primary host for Puccinia kuehnii is sugarcane (Saccharum spp.). The fungus specifically attacks the leaves, interfering with the photosynthetic efficiency of the plant. Susceptibility varies widely among commercial sugarcane varieties, making genetic diversity a key factor in how the disease manifests within a specific agricultural region or commercial plantation.
The visual symptoms of the disease are characterized by the development of numerous, elongated pustules on the leaf blades. Initially, these pustules appear bright orange, but they may darken to brown or black as the fungus reaches the teliospore stage. Heavily infected leaves lose their color, curl, and eventually die, which significantly compromises the plant's ability to produce energy.
Epidemic development is strongly favored by high relative humidity, frequent dew, and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C. These conditions provide the perfect environment for urediniospore germination and subsequent penetration of the leaf epidermis. Outbreaks often occur during periods of prolonged cloudy and rainy weather, which protect the spores from desiccation and UV radiation.
The economic impact of orange rust is substantial, primarily due to the reduction in biomass and the percentage of sucrose accumulated in the stalks. When photosynthesis is hindered, the crop fails to mature properly, leading to lower sugar yields at harvest. Controlling this disease requires a multifaceted approach, as the pathogen's rapid wind-borne spread makes it difficult to contain without integrated management programs.
