Description
The causative agent of celery rust is the fungus Puccinia laevis, an obligate parasite belonging to the order Pucciniales. It specifically targets plants within the Apiaceae family. The disease is known for its ability to rapidly spread through sporulation, significantly impacting the health and vigor of host plants.
The primary host for this pathogen is cultivated celery. The fungus primarily colonizes leaves and petioles. While primarily a threat to agricultural crops, the disease can also persist on wild umbelliferous weeds, which serve as an overwintering site and a reservoir for the pathogen's primary inoculum.
Disease symptoms are characterized by the development of distinct fungal structures on the host plant.
- Development of chlorotic spots on the upper side of leaves.
- Appearance of rust-colored, powdery pustules (uredinia) on the undersides of the leaves.
