Description
Puccinia lagenophorae is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for the rust disease commonly known as Lagenophora rust. As a member of the Pucciniaceae family, this obligate biotroph relies entirely on living plant tissues to complete its biological cycle, causing significant physiological stress to its hosts.
The disease primarily affects members of the Asteraceae family. Common susceptible hosts include various species of Senecio, such as the common groundsel, as well as garden favorites like daisies (Bellis perennis), calendula, and cineraria. The broad host range within this plant family makes the pathogen a persistent issue in both natural habitats and ornamental gardens.
Symptoms are distinct and easily identifiable: the emergence of small, bright orange to reddish-brown aecia on the undersides of leaves, stems, and sometimes floral parts. These pustules rupture the plant epidermis, releasing masses of spores. Advanced infection often results in leaf chlorosis, curling, stunted development, and occasionally, premature plant death due to exhaustion of resources.
The proliferation of the fungus is highly dependent on humidity and moderate temperatures. Moisture is essential for spore germination and infection, meaning that rainy seasons or overhead irrigation in poorly ventilated greenhouses create ideal conditions for the disease to spread rapidly. Spores are dispersed efficiently by wind currents, which can facilitate long-distance infection.
Integrated management is the most effective approach for control. This includes strictly removing and destroying infected plant debris to minimize inoculum sources. In professional nurseries or high-value garden settings, the use of contact or systemic fungicides, particularly those containing triazoles or copper, can be effective if applied during the early stages of the disease cycle.
