Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Puccinia lantanae, an obligate parasite that specifically infects Lantana species. This pathogen belongs to the rust fungi group, which is known for its ability to produce massive amounts of wind-dispersed spores that can travel across significant distances.

The primary symptom of lantana rust is the appearance of small, bright yellow to orange-brown pustules, primarily on the underside of the leaves. These structures, known as uredinia, rupture the leaf epidermis, revealing mass quantities of spores that cause the characteristic "rusty" appearance of the affected tissue.

Development and spread of the pathogen are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, dew, and moderate temperatures. In greenhouse environments or regions with high rainfall, the disease can spread rapidly, as free moisture on the leaf surface is required for spore germination.

The damage caused by Puccinia lantanae is significant for the health of the plant. Infected leaves often become chlorotic, wither, and drop prematurely. This reduction in the photosynthetic area weakens the plant, leading to stunted growth and a marked decrease in the number and quality of flowers.

Management strategies focus on prevention and sanitation to limit the spread of the fungus. Key measures include:

  • Maintaining proper spacing to enhance air circulation;
  • Avoiding overhead irrigation that wets the foliage;
  • Sanitizing tools and removing infected plant debris immediately;
  • Applying preventive fungicides labeled for rust control during humid periods.
