The causative agent of this disease is Puccinia leonotidicola, a highly specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the rust fungi family. As an obligate parasite, it survives by extracting nutrients from the living tissues of the host plant, eventually causing distinct structural changes in the leaf epidermis through its spore-forming processes.

The primary host for this pathogen is the Leonotis genus, particularly Leonotis leonurus. The infection targets the foliage and herbaceous stems, leading to systemic physiological stress that impacts both the vegetative growth and the aesthetic quality of the plant, often compromising its blooming cycle.

Infection is characterized by the initial appearance of chlorotic lesions on the upper leaf surface. As the pathogen matures, these spots erupt into rusty-orange pustules on the underside of the leaves. These pustules represent active spore-producing structures that release vast quantities of spores into the environment.

The development of the fungus is strictly dependent on climatic factors. High relative humidity, persistent morning dew, and poor air circulation within dense plant clusters are critical drivers for the germination of spores. Once established, the disease can spread rapidly throughout the garden if environmental conditions remain favorable.

Control strategies focus on sanitation and preventative management. Gardeners should prioritize spacing to improve airflow, avoid overhead irrigation to keep foliage dry, and promptly remove and destroy infected plant debris to reduce the inoculum load. If the infestation is severe, the application of systemic or contact fungicides is required to curb the spread of the pathogen.
