Pathogen and disease type. The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Puccinia lobeliae, which belongs to the order Pucciniales. As an obligate parasite, it relies entirely on the living tissues of its host plant to obtain nutrients. This pathogen is responsible for a systemic disease classified under rust fungi, which are known for their complex life cycles and ability to rapidly infect host populations.

Host plants. The fungus primarily infects plants within the Lobelia genus. It is particularly problematic for gardeners and commercial growers who maintain dense plantings of various Lobelia cultivars. Both ornamental perennial and annual varieties are susceptible, making this disease a common concern in garden landscapes, greenhouses, and nursery settings.

Symptoms and signs. The infection begins as small, chlorotic spots appearing on the upper leaf surfaces. As the fungus matures, characteristic pustules, known as uredinia, develop on the undersides of the leaves. These structures rupture the epidermis to release masses of rusty-brown spores. Infected foliage typically undergoes yellowing, becomes withered, and eventually drops off, causing significant stress to the plant.

Conditions for development. Puccinia lobeliae thrives in environments characterized by high humidity and moderate temperatures, typically between 18°C and 24°C. The presence of free moisture on the leaf surface, such as dew or spray residue, is essential for spore germination. Poor air circulation caused by overcrowded plantings significantly increases the rate of disease transmission within a patch.

Harmfulness and protection measures. The economic and aesthetic impact of this disease is substantial, as it leads to rapid decline in vigor and floral production. Effective control involves cultural practices such as ensuring proper plant spacing to improve airflow, watering at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage, and prompt removal of infected debris. Chemical intervention with appropriate fungicides is often necessary during persistent outbreaks to suppress fungal spread.
