Description
Puccinia malvacearum is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for the disease known as hollyhock rust. This fungus exclusively targets plants within the Malvaceae family, including hollyhocks, mallows, and lavateras. It is a widespread issue that can affect both commercial plantations and ornamental flower gardens globally.
The characteristic signs of infection appear as small, raised spots or pustules on the underside of the leaves, which eventually spread to the stems and leaf stalks. These pustules typically start as orange-brown or reddish-brown lesions. As the fungus matures, they turn dark brown or even black, often causing the foliage to yellow, wither, and drop prematurely.
The development of this disease is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, rain, and temperatures ranging between 15°C and 20°C. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind, water splashes from irrigation, or contaminated tools. The pathogen is resilient and often overwinters in plant debris or on living perennial tissues of host plants.
The impact of Puccinia malvacearum on host health is significant, as it drains the plant's metabolic resources and severely disrupts photosynthesis. Infected plants show reduced vigor, stunted growth, and poor flowering. In severe cases, the foliage loss is so extensive that the plant dies, especially if the infestation begins early in the growing season.
Effective management requires a combination of sanitary practices and chemical intervention:
- Promptly remove and destroy infected plant foliage to prevent further spread.
- Ensure adequate spacing between plants to promote better air circulation and leaf drying.
- Avoid overhead watering to keep foliage dry.
- Clean up all plant debris at the end of the growing season to minimize overwintering sites.
- Apply systemic fungicides as a preventative measure or at the first sign of visible pustules.
