Description

The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Puccinia nitida, an obligate parasite that specifically infects members of the Apiaceae (Umbelliferae) family. It represents a significant challenge for professional growers of herbs and root vegetables worldwide.

Common hosts for this pathogen include parsley, celery, and parsnips. The fungus typically survives between seasons in crop residues or on infected seeds, necessitating strict agricultural hygiene to prevent early outbreaks in newly established fields.

Symptoms typically present as small, chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surface, corresponding to the development of orange-brown pustules on the underside. As the infection progresses, these pustules release masses of spores, causing the leaves to yellow and prematurely wither, ultimately leading to significant foliage loss.

The spread of Puccinia nitida is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity, heavy dew, and moderate temperatures ranging from 15 to 22°C. These conditions trigger the germination of spores, which are then disseminated by wind or splashing water across the field.

Economic damage is caused by the reduction of photosynthetic area, which leads to stunted growth and lower yield quality. In severe cases, the entire harvest of greens can be deemed unsalable due to the unsightly appearance and poor health of the leaves caused by the fungal infection.
