Description
The disease known as Phragmites rust is caused by the obligate parasite Puccinia phragmitis. This fungus follows a heteroecious life cycle, meaning it requires two unrelated host species to complete its development. It primarily infects common reeds, but uses species of Rumex (dock and sorrel) as alternate hosts to produce its sexual spore stages.
The pathogen is significant in both wild ecosystems and agricultural settings. While common reeds serve as the main reservoir for the fungus, its ability to infect members of the Polygonaceae family makes it a potential threat to vegetable crops like rhubarb and sorrel, especially when these fields are adjacent to wetlands.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear as bright orange or rusty-brown pustules on the leaf surfaces and stems of the affected plants. These pustules represent the mass production of spores. On secondary hosts like sorrel, the fungus creates distinctive yellow or orange aecial cups, which eventually lead to necrotic spots, leaf yellowing, and premature senescence.
Favorable conditions for the development of Puccinia phragmitis include high humidity, moderate temperatures, and persistent leaf wetness. These conditions promote the germination of urediniospores, which are then disseminated by wind to healthy plants, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly across fields and marshlands during the growing season.
The economic impact of this disease is mainly linked to the reduced biomass and poor quality of harvested leaves in affected crops. Effective control measures rely on an integrated approach, which includes removing infected plant debris to reduce inoculum levels and maintaining buffer zones between agricultural crops and wild reed patches to minimize the risk of infection.
