Description
The disease is caused by the obligate parasite Puccinia pimpinellae, a rust fungus belonging to the Basidiomycota phylum. It is a highly host-specific pathogen that primarily targets plants within the Apiaceae family, most notably those in the Pimpinella genus.
This rust specifically affects burnet species, often impacting crops grown for medicinal or essential oil production. The infection primarily targets leaves and petioles, posing a significant risk to the quality and yield of the harvest in regions where these crops are cultivated.
Symptoms are identified by the appearance of small, powdery rust-brown pustules, mostly on the underside of the leaves. As the disease progresses, the infected tissue becomes chlorotic, leading to premature senescence and leaf abscission, which drastically impacts the photosynthetic capacity of the host plant.
The development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The spores are primarily wind-dispersed, allowing the disease to spread rapidly through fields when moisture is present on the foliage, with the fungus overwintering on plant debris.
