Puccinia rhaetica is a specialized fungal pathogen classified within the order Pucciniales. As a member of the rust fungi group, it is an obligate parasite, meaning it requires living host tissue to complete its life cycle. It is specifically adapted to infect high-altitude plant species, particularly those belonging to the Gentiana genus, found in alpine and subalpine environments.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are various alpine gentians. The fungus primarily targets the leaves and stems, where it establishes its mycelium within the intercellular spaces of the host tissue. By tapping into the host's nutrient transport system, the fungus significantly drains the plant's metabolic energy, which is critical for survival in harsh mountain climates.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as distinct pustules on the leaf surfaces. These pustules appear as clusters of orange or reddish-brown spores, which rupture the epidermis of the plant tissue as they mature. The visible presence of these spots is a hallmark of the rust disease, often accompanied by chlorosis and necrotic lesions on the surrounding leaf tissue.

The development and spread of Puccinia rhaetica are highly dependent on environmental conditions. High humidity, cool temperatures, and the presence of surface moisture from fog or dew are essential for spore germination and infection. Wind currents play a major role in the dissemination of spores, facilitating the spread of the pathogen from infected plants to healthy ones across alpine meadows or garden collections.

To control the impact of the disease, it is essential to implement strict cultural and chemical management practices. Removing infected plant debris helps reduce the inoculum load for the following season. Additionally, ensuring proper plant spacing to improve air circulation and applying appropriate systemic fungicides can effectively protect susceptible plants from severe outbreaks.
