Description

Columnar rust is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Puccinia ribis. It is a specific parasitic fungus that targets leaves of Ribes species. The pathogen thrives during the growing season, significantly impacting the physiological condition of the host plant by interfering with its normal metabolic processes.

The primary hosts for this fungus are blackcurrant and redcurrant bushes. Gooseberries may also be affected if they are growing in close proximity to heavily infected currants. The fungus is highly specialized, meaning it requires these specific hosts to complete its life cycle and maintain its presence in the garden environment.

Symptoms initially appear on the upper leaf surface as small yellow-green spots. As the infection progresses, distinctive orange-brown columnar structures develop on the underside of the leaves. These structures represent the fruiting bodies of the fungus, which release spores that can be easily transported by wind or moisture to infect other plants.

The development of Puccinia ribis is heavily dependent on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. Rainy summers create the perfect conditions for the rapid spread of spores. Furthermore, poor garden hygiene, such as failing to remove infected plant debris, ensures that the fungus survives from one year to the next.

The economic impact of this disease is significant, as it causes premature defoliation of the bushes. This loss of foliage leads to weakened plant vigor and a substantial reduction in the quality and quantity of berry yields. Protective strategies include:

  • Strict sanitation by removing and burning all fallen leaves in autumn.
