Puccinia sessilis is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the rust fungi group, responsible for the disease known as bulb rust. As an obligate parasite, it follows a complex life cycle often involving alternate hosts. The pathogen typically utilizes grasses from the Phalaris genus as primary hosts, while the aecial stage manifests on various bulbous plants, causing significant infection.

The host plants most susceptible to this fungus include tulips, hyacinths, and various species of the Allium genus. The disease is characterized by the formation of distinctive yellow to orange pustules on leaves and stems. These pustules contain aeciospores that, when released, facilitate rapid secondary infections across the field, leading to severe chlorosis and early senescence of the foliage.

Environmental factors play a crucial role in the development and spread of Puccinia sessilis. The fungus thrives in cool, humid conditions, particularly when dew or persistent rainfall provides the necessary moisture for spore germination. Wind is the primary vector for the dispersal of spores, allowing the disease to spread rapidly from infected areas to healthy plantings, especially in dense and poorly ventilated crops.

The damage caused by this pathogen is primarily due to the reduction of photosynthetic efficiency. By destroying leaf tissue, the fungus inhibits the plant's ability to produce energy, which directly results in smaller bulbs and weakened plants.
