Puccinia singularis is a specialized species of obligate parasitic fungi belonging to the Basidiomycota division and the order Pucciniales. This pathogen causes specific types of rust disease on certain host plants, significantly disrupting photosynthesis and metabolic processes within the infected plant tissues.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are plants from the Asteraceae family, particularly certain species of wormwood and other herbaceous wild crops. The fungus displays a high tropism for leaf and stem tissues, invading them through stomata or microscopic injuries in the epidermis.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as the appearance of characteristic pustules known as uredinia, which are typically round or slightly elongated. Within these structures, massive spore maturation occurs, visually appearing as a yellow-brown powdery coating. Severe infestations lead to premature desiccation of the leaf blade.
Disease development is directly dependent on hydrothermal factors: optimal conditions include high relative humidity (above 80%) and moderate temperatures between +18°C and +22°C. Dew and fog promote spore germination, which facilitates rapid secondary infection spreading to neighboring plants within fields or natural habitats.
The damage caused by Puccinia singularis involves the depletion of the host plant due to the translocation of nutrients toward the fungal mycelium sites. Control measures involve using resistant plant varieties, timely destruction of crop residues, and, if necessary, the application of systemic fungicides from the triazole or strobilurin groups to inhibit spore formation.
