Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Puccinia stenotaphricola, a member of the Pucciniaceae family. It is an obligate parasite that specifically infects grasses, primarily focusing its life cycle on the host plant Stenotaphrum secundatum. As a biotrophic pathogen, it relies entirely on the nutrients extracted from the living host cells to support its metabolic needs and spore production.

The primary host for this pathogen is St. Augustine grass, a widely used turfgrass in warm-climate regions. The fungus targets the foliage, specifically the leaf blades and sheaths, where it colonizes internal tissues. Because this grass is often used in high-value aesthetic settings, the damage caused by the rust fungus can be both an agronomic and a cosmetic concern.

Symptoms of the infection start as small chlorotic flecks that eventually develop into raised pustules, known as uredinia. These pustules typically appear as vibrant orange or rust-colored spots on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, the pustules rupture, releasing massive amounts of spores into the air. Infected leaves eventually turn yellow, wither, and die back, leading to a thinning of the turf canopy.

The spread of Puccinia stenotaphricola is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, heavy dew, and moderate temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind, irrigation water, and maintenance equipment. Turf areas with poor air circulation, excessive shade, or those suffering from nutrient deficiencies are significantly more susceptible to outbreaks.

The severity of the disease lies in the reduction of photosynthetic efficiency, which weakens the entire plant. Long-term infection can result in stunted growth, reduced root development, and decreased resilience to drought or temperature extremes. Effective management requires a holistic approach, combining cultural practices that reduce leaf wetness with chemical interventions when environmental conditions favor the pathogen.

  • Irrigate early in the morning to allow leaves to dry quickly during the day.
  • Improve air circulation by pruning surrounding trees or shrubs.
  • Maintain a balanced fertilization program, avoiding excessive nitrogen that can promote succulent growth.
  • Regularly mow the grass to the recommended height to encourage a dense, healthy canopy.
  • Apply systemic fungicides as a preventative or curative measure during peak periods of humidity.
